Governance of Natural Resources
Conflict and the Governance of Natural Resources in Africa
This project involves field research to examine the linkages between natural resource governance—particularly private sector involvement—and political stability/conflict in various African countries. Cases offer variation across the levels of political stability and violence, types of natural resources, and roles played by private sector actors, foreign and domestic governments, and communities. By comparing the role of private sector actors in different sectors—diamonds, gold, and oil in particular—the research is able to isolate key variables and contribute to a broader framework for conceptualizing natural resource governance and violent conflict in Africa.
