Improving the Capacity to Act on Gender Equality in Colombia: A Fresh Look at the Coffee Export Sector
The North-South Institute has launched a new capacity building initiative intended to strengthen the monitoring and research capacity of NSI partners in Colombia. The project, developed in 2013 in consultation with La Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC), will highlight the country’s important coffee sector (responsible for 25% of rural livelihoods). Moreover, it will create a social dialogue about gender equality – and the importance of women farmers – in coffee producing communities. The emergence of female-headed households associated with Colombia’s armed conflict, low levels of education, property rights and domestic violence represent some key gender concerns in producer regions.
The project will result in four main outputs:
??? ?A monitoring methodology, including gender indicators, that can be used to track issues of concern within the sector
??? ?New baseline data disaggregated by gender from Huila, Cauca and Nari?o
??? ?Workshops at the community and institutional level
??? ?An international dialogue on the issues raised by the project.
The project methodology can be replicated by FNC and other labour associations interested in social, labour and equality considerations in their sector.
